Antique Furniture Info

There are many reasons that people love antique furniture. You can't beat the craftsmanship and beauty in age old pieces. Some enjoy the history that is inherent in collecting antique furniture. Some others also buy antique furniture as an investment for the future. Whatever reason you have for collecting antique furniture, you are sure to be fulfilled by shopping and purchasing these beautiful pieces of furniture.

As with most collectibles, antique furniture is collected according to the time period of manufacture rather than with particular type of items. The most common way of collecting furniture is to choose your time period and look for items from that particular time period. There are many different time periods from which you could choose, for example, Louis XV period and the Queen Anne period (1702-1714). Items from the Queen Anne period have delicate lines, excellent balance and lack of excessive adornment. This is in contrast to the Louis XV period which is characterised by gliding and intricate scrollwork.

Other than the time period, you may collect according to a particular type of building material. Most antiques are made from wood. There are many different types of wood used. In Victorian times, a popular type of wood was Rosewood. In the 17th and 18th century, Walnut was used. Beech was common in the 17th and 19th centuries and was popularly used for framing and furniture for painting. You should learn to recognise the different kinds of woods and their patinas so that you become better at spotting fakes.

Fakes are a common problem for anyone collecting antiques. Unfortunately, reproductions can be sold as the real thing. In some cases, the seller may not be aware that the piece is not a real antique. Always do your research and reading before hand. Armed with knowledge, you should be able to distinguish between a real and a fake item.
